HEMP FIBER

Hemp Fiber is also known as hemp “shives” or hemp “core” fiber. This is the woody, inner part of the hemp stalk which is left over when the bark fiber is removed. The inner fibers of hemp are more woody, and although they look like wood chips, they are much lighter and more absorbent.

What is Hemp Fiber?

Hemp fiber is commonly called bast, which refers to the fibers which grow on the outside of the plant’s stalk. Bast fibers give the plants strength. Hemp fibers can be between approximately 0.91 m (3 ft) and 4.6 m (15 ft) long, running the length of the plant.

How to use Hemp Fiber?

Hemp Fiber can be used to make over 25,000 different products, including textiles, paper, paint and varnishes, particle and MDF board, cellulose plastics, cordage, biofuel, food, furniture, body care products and the list goes on.

Depending on the processing used to remove the fiber from the stem, the hemp may naturally be creamy white, brown, gray, black or green. Hemp fibers have been used in prototype quantities to strengthen concrete, and in other composite materials for many construction and manufacturing applications.

Hemp hurds have many uses such as animal bedding for both horses and small mammals, as well as mulch. They are also used in the construction industry for such diverse products as composite panels (hemp board) as well as a type of cement (hempcrete).
